Catalina | The Southern California Island Getaway
AVALON, CATALINA
Another great option for the pilot's lunch is Catalina. Airport in the Sky, the Catalina airport nickname is also a short flight out of Santa Monica. The flight offers a chance to take a trip across the water to a place that seems like it is much further away than it is. The steep cliffs that drop off into the turquoise waters makes you feel like you have been transported to a tropical island. Make sure to take a flight around the island and don't miss Two Harbors on the way.
The landing can be a bit tricky if it is your first time. As you approach, the runway is narrow and sits atop a cliff so it makes you feel as low you are higher than you are. Don't fall for the optical illusion because you will end up in the side of the cliff. Be warned that the runway is a little bumpy due to the asphalt cracking and crumbling. Do not let any of these warnings stop you from going out because it is a great place to visit.
While the airport sits isolated in the middle of the island, there is a restaurant and gift shop right there or you can take the shuttle to Avalon. There is also a landing fee of $25 or you can purchase an annual pass for $150. This annual pass gives you free landing fees, 20% off the shuttle prices, free cookies and a lot more. They have buffalo burgers but my favorite, just like Camarillo, is the tri-tip sandwich! There is also plenty of wildlife around the airport. I have seen buffalo, hummingbirds, coyotes and even a fox that is friendly enough to come on the patio.
Make sure to visit this island as it is a great weekend getaway or even lunch stop.
