Flying to Camarillo for tri-tip...

CAMARILLO, CALIFORNIA

As a pilot, there is always a hunt for a good excuse to fly. It often ends up being a flight for a meal, the "$100 hamburger" as they say. One of the best places to visit is the Camarillo airport on a Sunday. There is a spot called the Waypoint Cafe that serves one of the best try-tip sandwiches and the best part is that it is located right at the airport. They have indoor and outdoor seating (I have never sat indoors) but be sure to plan for a wait because it seems to be a very popular spot and not just with the pilots. There is also an outdoor waiting area with patio-type furniture and, as of recently, a cart with mimosas and the like while you wait (not for the pilots). For the kiddos there is a miniature of the airport that they can play on. There is even a loud speaker tuned to the tower frequency so that you can hear the traffic coming and going.

From the Santa Monica airport it is less than a 20 minute flight so it is quick and easy. The views along the way are great! One particular Sunday, the clouds were rolling out over the Santa Monica mountains making the coast route perfect for some aerial photography and sightseeing. The inland route was bad as well with a perfect view of the Getty and of the UCLA/Westwood areas. Flying in Southern California is always very scenic.

On the way home, I stopped by Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook to get some sunset photos. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.
