A Family Weekend on Quantum of the Seas from Los Angeles
In October 2025, Amanda, Daniel and I boarded Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas in Los Angeles for a four-night cruise to Ensenada. Another couple joined us with their children, who are close in age to Daniel, making this an easy long-weekend getaway for both families. The sailing happened to fall during Royal Caribbean’s Halloween celebrations, which added costumes, decorations and themed activities to an itinerary we already knew well.
Our Four-Night Cruise Itinerary
Our sailing departed Los Angeles on October 2 and returned on October 6. The itinerary included a sea day, a full day in Ensenada and another sea day before arriving back in Los Angeles. With only one port, the trip gave us plenty of time to enjoy the ship without feeling rushed.
We booked an ocean-view balcony cabin and used My Time Dining, which gave us helpful flexibility when coordinating meals and activities with young children.
Cruising With Another Family
Traveling with friends made the weekend especially enjoyable. Because their children are similar in age to Daniel, the kids had built-in companions and the adults could share the experience with people navigating the same schedules, energy levels and occasional changes of plan that come with traveling as a family.
A short cruise like this worked well for a group trip. There was enough time to settle in and explore the ship, but it did not require a full week away.
Quantum of the Seas With Young Children
Quantum of the Seas offered plenty to keep the children occupied. Daniel spent time in the kids club, and we also enjoyed the pools, family activities and several shows. Having so much available aboard the ship was particularly useful on the two sea days.
The ship is much larger than Carnival Radiance, so getting from one activity to another sometimes required more planning. That size also meant there was more to explore, and the weekend never felt short of things to do.
Riding the North Star
One of the most distinctive experiences aboard Quantum of the Seas is North Star, the glass observation capsule that rises high above the ship. We rode it as a group and had expansive views over the ship and the ocean.
The ride was gentle and gave us a completely different perspective of Quantum’s upper decks. It was also one of the best opportunities during the cruise for group photos.
Halloween at Sea
Although Halloween was not the reason we booked the cruise, the timing made the trip more memorable. The ship hosted themed events, and the children had opportunities to dress in costume and join the festivities. Daniel dressed as a pirate, which made for some of our favorite photos from the weekend.
The celebrations added energy to the ship without taking over the entire cruise. For families traveling around October, the seasonal activities can be a fun bonus.
Wonderland: More Memorable for the Experience Than the Food
For our specialty dinner, we tried Wonderland, Quantum of the Seas’ fantasy-themed restaurant. The imaginative setting and theatrical presentation made it feel like more than an ordinary meal, and there were plenty of opportunities for fun, Instagram-style photos.
The experience itself was enjoyable, especially as something different to do aboard the ship. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the presentation for us. We were glad we tried Wonderland once, but the atmosphere and photo opportunities were more memorable than the meal.
Exploring Ensenada in an Electric Vintage-Style Car
When we arrived in Ensenada, we skipped a structured shore excursion and rented an electric vintage-style car. It was a fun and flexible way for both families to explore together, and the open-air design made the drive part of the experience.
We returned to some of the same taco places we had enjoyed on an earlier visit. Rather than trying to pack the day with new attractions, we kept things relaxed and revisited familiar favorites before returning to the ship.
How Quantum Compared With Our Carnival Radiance Cruise
Because we had recently sailed to Ensenada on Carnival Radiance, it was interesting to experience a similar itinerary on a very different ship. Quantum of the Seas felt larger and offered more onboard attractions, while Carnival Radiance was easier to navigate and had a more compact atmosphere.
Neither experience needs to replace the other. The best choice depends on whether the priority is a ship with a wide variety of activities or a simpler short getaway from Southern California.
Would We Take This Cruise Again?
Quantum of the Seas worked well for a family long weekend. The short Los Angeles departure, two sea days, kids club, shows, North Star and Halloween activities gave us plenty to do, while the single port day kept the itinerary manageable.
Traveling with another family made the sailing even better. We would consider this itinerary again, particularly for a convenient getaway where the ship itself is a major part of the trip.
