Fiji is a South Pacific island nation known for its turquoise lagoons, coral reefs, tropical forests, welcoming communities, and more than 300 islands.
Some of the main places to visit in Fiji include Viti Levu, the country’s largest island and home to Nadi, Suva, the Coral Coast, and many of Fiji’s most accessible resorts. The nearby Mamanuca Islands are known for beaches, snorkeling, surfing, and day trips, while the Yasawa Islands offer a more remote setting with dramatic volcanic landscapes and excellent island-hopping.
Other notable destinations in Fiji include Vanua Levu, which is popular for diving, waterfalls, and a quieter pace of life. Taveuni is often called the Garden Island because of its rainforests, hiking trails, and waterfalls. Kadavu is surrounded by the Great Astrolabe Reef and is especially popular with divers, snorkelers, kayakers, and travelers looking to get away from larger resort areas.
The best time to visit Fiji is generally during the dry season from May through October, when temperatures are slightly cooler and rainfall is lower. November through April is warmer and more humid, with heavier tropical showers and a greater chance of cyclones.
Safety in Fiji is generally good, but travelers should still take normal precautions, protect personal belongings, and use extra care when walking alone or traveling at night. Weather conditions and ocean currents can change quickly, so local advice should always be followed.
The cost of traveling in Fiji can vary widely. Luxury island resorts and private transfers can be expensive, while mainland hotels, local guesthouses, public ferries, and smaller island properties offer more affordable options.
Fijian culture blends Indigenous iTaukei traditions with strong Indo-Fijian influences. Village life, family, religion, rugby, traditional ceremonies, and the sharing of kava all play important roles. Visitors are often welcomed warmly and should respect local customs, especially when visiting villages.
