Flying to San Diego During COVID-19

LOS ANGELES | CALIFORNIA

San Diego has always been one of our regular locations to fly for the $100 hamburger but COVID-19 has put a damper on that. Since San Diego opened their restaurants for outdoor dining before Los Angeles, it was time to get back to Phil’s for some long overdue BBQ. I know that I have probably said this a million times but general aviation flying in southern California is hard to beat. Not only do you have stunning views from the mountains to the oceans to the deserts but the weather almost always cooperates and contributes to the joy of flying. This San Diego flight was no different.

Flying into Montgomery Field (KMYF) has become our new normal when going to San Diego since it is cheaper than flying into KSAN (albeit a little further from the action) and the FBO there (CrownAir) is always so friendly and accommodating. It was good to see the COVID hadn’t changed that. We were able to get the crew car (main sure to use our mask and social distance) and make our way to Phil’s BBQ for some lunch. It was so nice to finally visit someplace that we could sit at a restaurant (outdoors) and enjoy a meal. General aviation is a blessing during normal times but having the ability to fly somewhere so quickly that may not have all the restrictions in place as where you live gives you a bit of freedom that you would not otherwise have. If you are a pilot, I hope that you have been able to take advantage of this opportunity that it affords us and if you are thinking about becoming a pilot, I can’t recommend it enough.
